Even new transcriptionists occasionally encounter similar challenges. The most frequent issues include:
Verbatim transcription is a word-for-word transcription of an audio or video file. Every spoken word is captured exactly as it occurs, including filler words such as “um” and “uh,” stutters, false starts, repetitions, interjections, slang, and meaningful pauses. Nothing is omitted or edited. This transcription style preserves both what was said and how it was said.
Because AI language models are still in development and may miss words, phrases, or context, especially in poor audio or multi-speaker recordings. AI-generated transcripts must be reviewed and corrected by a human transcriptionist to ensure accuracy, completeness, and professional quality.
In verbatim and clean verbatim transcription, grammar and phrasing are never corrected or rewritten. Transcriptionists document exactly what the speaker said, even when it is grammatically incorrect. Preserving original wording ensures transcription accuracy and compliance with professional transcription standards, especially in legal and academic use cases.
Professional transcription follows standard number formatting rules. Numbers less than ten should be written out in words (for example, “There are two cats here”), while numbers ten and greater should be written using numerals (for example, “She ordered 15 pizzas for the party” or phone numbers such as 751-333-0000).
Verbatim transcription records speech exactly as it is spoken, including filler words such as “um,” “uh,” “like,” “you know,” “yeah,” and “uh-huh,” as well as stutters, false starts, repetitions, background noise, and non-speech sounds like laughter. This style is used when a complete, unedited record of the audio is required, such as in legal documents, depositions, academic research, and closed captioning.
Clean verbatim transcription removes filler words, stutters, false starts, unintentional repetition, and excessive pauses while preserving the speaker’s meaning and intent. There is no paraphrasing. This transcription style is commonly used for interviews, meetings, conferences, focus groups, classes, podcasts, webinars, and business content where readability is the priority.
